Cold email open rates used to be the first number every outbound team checked. A campaign at 60% opens felt healthy; one at 30% triggered a subject line rewrite. In 2026, that logic is broken. Open tracking has become so unreliable — and so risky for deliverability — that many experienced senders have switched it off entirely. Here is why cold email open rates mislead you, and what to measure instead.
Why Open Rates Became Unreliable
An “open” is recorded when a tiny invisible image (a tracking pixel) embedded in your email gets loaded. Three developments have wrecked that signal:
- Apple Mail Privacy Protection. Apple Mail pre-loads images on its servers for every incoming email, whether the recipient ever reads it or not. Every Apple Mail user in your list registers as an “open” — even when your message sits untouched.
- Corporate security scanners. Most B2B mailboxes sit behind gateways like Microsoft Defender or Proofpoint, which fetch images and click links to scan for threats before delivery. These bots register opens (and clicks) no human ever made.
- Image blocking. Many Outlook configurations block remote images by default, so real reads never fire the pixel at all.
The result: your open rate is inflated in some segments, deflated in others, and you have no way of knowing which is which. A “70% open rate” tells you almost nothing about how many humans actually read your email.
Open Tracking Can Actively Hurt Deliverability
The tracking pixel is not free. It is an image hosted on a tracking domain, and spam filters notice it:
- If your sending tool uses a shared tracking domain, you inherit the reputation of thousands of other senders using it — including the bad ones. A flagged tracking domain can send otherwise clean emails to spam.
- Even with a custom tracking domain, a pixel plus rewritten links makes your message look machine-generated rather than a one-to-one email from a real person.
- Plain-text emails with no pixel and no link rewriting consistently see better inbox placement, which is why they are a staple of modern email deliverability practice.
So open tracking gives you distorted data and lowers the odds your email is seen at all. That is a bad trade.
What to Measure Instead
Judge cold email campaigns on outcomes that cannot be faked by a bot:
- Reply rate. The cleanest top-of-funnel signal: a human read your email and acted. Compare yours against realistic cold email reply rate benchmarks rather than vanity open numbers.
- Positive reply rate. Separate “interested, tell me more” from “unsubscribe.” A 5% reply rate that is 80% negative is worse than a 3% reply rate that is mostly positive.
- Meetings booked per 1,000 prospects. This is the number your pipeline actually runs on, and it makes campaigns comparable regardless of list size.
- Bounce rate. Keep it under 2%. High bounces are a list-quality problem you fix with email verification before sending, not after.
- Inbox placement. Run periodic seed tests to see whether you land in the inbox, promotions, or spam. This answers the question open rates were pretending to answer.
When Open Rates Are Still Worth a Glance
Open data is not completely useless — it is directional. Two situations where it still helps:
- Sudden collapse. If opens drop from 60% to 15% overnight across all campaigns, something structural broke: a blacklist, an authentication failure, a burned domain. Investigate immediately.
- Same-audience comparisons. Comparing two cold email subject lines sent to the same segment at the same time still yields a rough relative signal, because the bot noise affects both variants equally. Just never treat the absolute number as truth.
How to Transition Off Open Tracking
- Turn off open tracking in your sending tool, or at minimum move to a custom tracking domain.
- Rebuild your reporting around replies, positive replies, meetings booked, and bounces.
- Set a weekly deliverability check: seed test, blacklist check, bounce review.
- Re-baseline your benchmarks. Your “new” numbers will look smaller but will finally be real.
- Coach your team to optimize copy for replies, not opens — the subject line’s job is to earn the read, but the campaign’s job is to start conversations.
Open rates were always a proxy. Replies and booked meetings are the real thing. Measure what pays you.
